Rumassala

Sun and sea meets myth and legend

The name ‘Unawatuna’ translates to ‘it fell down’ referring to a story from the ancient Hindu epic of the Ramayana. Legend has it that when the monkey god Hanuman leapt from India carrying a piece of the Himalayas, a chunk of mountain fell at what would now be our doorstep – the bordering seaside hill of Rumassala. Identified by the pristine white Japanese Peace Pagoda at its summit, Rumassala is also a designated sanctuary filled with exotic flora and fauna including peacocks and rare medicinal plants. From Hotel J, you can access Rumassala with a tuk-tuk to the pagoda via the main road, or on an adventurous trekking trail that takes you through the coastal jungles.
